Eviosys is now part of Sonoco

At Eviosys, sustainability is at the core of everything we do in metal packaging manufacturing. Our commitment to sustainable packaging drives each initiative, focusing on reducing emissions, conserving resources, and optimising operations to support responsible practices in the metal packaging industry. Each effort brings notable benefits, from lowering the carbon footprint of our products to reducing waste and improving resource management.

Renewable energy and emission reduction
Solar panels: powering sustainability in metal packaging production
Solar energy is a cornerstone of our renewable strategy in metal packaging production. At our Murcia plant, we installed one of Spain’s largest rooftop solar arrays, comprising 7,912 panels that generate 5.2 MWh of clean energy. This installation meets 18% of the plant’s energy needs and reduces CO₂ emissions by 2,212 tons annually, reflecting our dedication to sustainable energy use at a large scale.

“Since we started our sustainability program in 2021 at Eviosys, we have completed the installation of 3 plants that are now equipped with solar panels, and we are in the process of completing a 4th one that will be operational in 2025. Each of these projects usually allows us to save 20-25% of our energy needs from the grid electricity supply and this is again another source of carbon footprint reduction.”
—Laurent LEUCIO, EHS & Sustainability Director

“The main challenge was distributing the solar energy. We had enough roof space for panels, but it was in areas with low energy use. To solve this, we built two new electrical stations to send the energy where it was needed, showing our commitment to implementing efficient, large-scale renewable energy across our operations.”

High-efficiency oxidizers: air quality improvement in metal packaging
To enhance sustainability and improve air quality, we implemented advanced HighEcon oxidizers across our metal packaging plants, targeting a significant reduction in volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. This upgrade allowed us to meet stringent environmental standards while minimising our environmental footprint.

“Eviosys’ main source of fossil fuel usage is our gas ovens used for the varnish curing process of our metal plates. To address this, we upgraded the equipment to a new generation of incinerators that regenerate heat from burning solvent emissions, redirecting it back into the ovens. This innovation has reduced gas consumption by 60% while maintaining the required curing conditions for our cans.
Each installation is a major project, involving infrastructure upgrades, energy integration, and strict safety measures. Since 2021, we’ve installed an average of five oxidizers per year and will continue until all of our lines are equipped with this modern technology.”
—Laurent LEUCIO, EHS & Sustainability Director
“The real challenge of this project was timing the dismantling of the roofs with a sufficiently long period of dry weather and securing the large crane needed for the job. The first attempt had to be postponed when these conditions weren’t met. Despite this, the project did not significantly affect production, which was a key success in balancing sustainability improvements with operational efficiency.”
— Maria-Mercedes Fructuoso-Martinez, Maintenance Manager, Murcia
This successful implementation highlights our commitment to sustainability transformation, demonstrating our ability to overcome logistical challenges while prioritizing environmental responsibility and operational continuity.

Energy Efficiency Enhancements
LED Lighting: LED lighting is a key part of our sustainable packaging efforts, enhancing workplace safety and health by providing consistent, high-quality illumination. This improves visibility, reduces eye strain, and lowers the risk of workplace accidents. LEDs emit less heat than traditional lighting, contributing to a cooler and more comfortable work environment. Beyond these benefits, LED lighting significantly reduces energy consumption, supporting our commitment to sustainability in metal packaging production.
“Light replacement with LED low-energy lamps is one of the most straightforward projects we started several years ago. It requires some coordination and, in some cases, significant changes to our electrical supply, but the energy reduction results are substantial.
Given the scale of our plants, with large surface areas and significant heights to cover, these are ambitious projects. So far, we have covered 84% of the surface area in our plants, and this percentage continues to grow.”
—Laurent Leucio, EHS & Sustainability Director

Sustainable equipment transition: moving toward cleaner and more efficient operations
Electric Forklifts: We have replaced traditional Gas-powered (LPG) forklifts across several metal packaging plants with electric models. This transition reduces greenhouse gas emissions, lowers noise levels, and minimises maintenance needs, underscoring our commitment to sustainability through cleaner, more efficient equipment.
“This project is a significant challenge in a factory like ours that operates 3 shifts. It forces us to adapt to a way of working that requires us to include fast loading routines in the forklift operator’s working day. In addition, the commissioning has also required the implementation of a new and demanding electrical installation according to the needs of the batteries.”
— Maria-Mercedes Fructuoso-Martinez, Maintenance Manager, Murcia

Zero Waste to Landfill Certification:
“The progressive Zero Waste to Landfill Certification of our plants in Iberia demonstrates our commitment to waste reduction and resource management. Certified annually by TÜV SÜD, these plants reuse, recycle, or recover over 95% of generated waste, supporting our goal to achieve 99% recycling by 2030. This success is driven by meticulous waste segregation, upgraded equipment, as well as training and awareness-raising to involve workers in the importance of the correct separation and recycling of the waste”
—Maria Teresa CAPEL TORRES, Regulatory Affairs & Environment Iberia
Through these initiatives, Eviosys continues to lead in sustainable transformation, aligning our practices with a healthier future for the planet. By promoting sustainability through renewable energy, operational efficiency, and waste reduction, we’re shaping a greener future for the metal packaging industry and inspiring sustainable practices across sectors.
