Fully Recyclable by 2030
The Future of Sustainable Packaging: Fully Recyclable by 2030
The European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) draft mandates that all packaging must be fully recyclable by 2030. This ambitious goal necessitates significant changes across various industries.
The emphasis on sustainable packaging, particularly metal packaging, is crucial as brands seek to meet regulatory requirements and consumer demands for eco-friendly solutions. This underscores the significance of recyclability in metal packaging, highlighting its infinite recyclability in contrast to the EU’s plastics tax and other tax reforms proposed under the Green Deal, which aims to reduce raw material consumption and waste; promoting the transition to a circular economy.
What Does Fully Recyclable by 2030 Mean?
Starting January 1, 2030, all packaging must be designed for recycling. It should be collected separately and processed efficiently without interfering with other recyclables. By 2035, the recycled materials need to be good enough to replace new materials and easy to recycle.
Future Packaging Recyclability Standards and Requirements
Packaging recyclability will be graded A, B, or C based on design criteria to ensure recycled content can replace the raw materials. From 2030, packaging must meet design for recycling standards specific to each category, From 2035, a new “recycled at scale” factor will be added, assessing the quantity of material actually recycled to determine compliance. Effective January 1, 2038, only packaging that meets recyclability standards of grades A or B (80% or higher) will be permitted on the market. Consequently, packaging classified as performance grade C will no longer be allowed.
The Importance of Recyclable Packaging
Recyclable metal packaging is essential for reducing environmental pollution and conserving resources. Metal packaging, unlike plastic, can be recycled infinitely, helping to reduce pollution in soils, oceans, and wildlife. The infinite recyclability of metal packaging makes it an ideal choice for sustainable packaging.
Sustainable Packaging Innovations: Leading the Way
Horizon™: A Sustainable Alternative to Plastic Lids
Eviosys has been at the forefront of sustainable metal packaging with their Horizon™ metal overcap. Horizon™ is a new metal packaging lid for food tins that can be fully recycled. Designed for use in the food industry, which includes products such as infant formula, tea, coffee, and biscuits, the newest edition is now lighter, resulting in a 33% decrease in CO2 emissions. This showcases how metal packaging containers can serve as an alternative to plastic lids. Horizon™ illustrates how metal packaging can play a key role in reaching the targets outlined by the PPWR.
Single-Serve Food Cans for Pet Food: A Convenient and Sustainable Choice
In addition to Horizon™, Eviosys offers innovative sustainable packaging solutions like the single-serve food can (3-piece can) for pet food. These cans are fully recyclable and provide a great alternative to pouches, ensuring that pet owners have exactly the quantity they need for one use, avoiding refrigeration and pet food left over in open cans. They are convenient for one-time use, maintaining the freshness of the pet food.
Aluminum Food cans : A Robust Alternative to Pouches
Another example is the aluminum food cans. These cans are fully recyclable and offer an excellent alternative to pouch packaging. They maintain the quality and safety of the food while contributing to sustainability goals.
Sustainable promotional tins for biscuits and confectionery: enhancing appeal and recyclability
Eviosys’ promotional packaging for confectionery and biscuits is an infinitely recyclable alternative. Metal tins improve brand’s shelf appeal whilst offering a more durable option. More than a simple container, promotional tins are collected and stored. More than 90% of consumers keep, refill, reuse or repurpose their promotional packaging tins, an opportunity for brands to be visible in customer’s home for decades. Once the packaging is finally thrown away, it goes back to the production of metal to serve the needs of the future generation to build trains, windmills, cars, … anything made of steel, including another can.
Commitment to Sustainability
All these metal packaging solutions from Eviosys align with the PPWR draft’s regulations, showcasing their commitment to sustainability and reducing environmental impact.
Market Trends and Survey Insights
Survey conducted by Focaldata shows that 45% of companies aim to use fully recyclable packaging within 1-3 years, and 90% of companies want to achieve this goal within the next decade. This trend highlights the growing importance of Eviosys’ sustainable metal packaging solutions like Horizon™, single-serve food cans, and aluminum trays. As businesses face stricter regulations and increasing consumer expectations, moving towards metal packaging offers a range of benefits, including compliance with PPWR’s regulations and meeting sustainability goals.
